String gauge advice

Post by Dave Hepworth »

Hi Folks,
I am wanting to start playing blues and rock on a 22.5 inch scale lap steel in open E tuning .The bottom string will be tuned to B and the top string tuned to G#.Could you please advise me on what string gauge set / pack would be appropriate please. Thanks in advance.

The set sold here (and elsewhere) linked below might work. Normally on a longer scale (like 25") set for E tuning the first string 13 gauge G# might break, but since the scale of your guitar is 22.5" I'm thinking it's okay.

Where I'm confused is the 6th string tuned to B. Open E normally has the 6th string tuned to E (I'm unfamiliar with B on the bottom). My question is are you tuning the 6th string down from E to B, or are you tuning it up to B from the normal E?

Hi Mark,
Many thanks ...B is dropped lower than the E which is on the 5th string

A low B on a short scale is ambitious. What notes ae you tuning the rest of the strings to? Is That Ist string going to be tunes to G# above E? that would be quite a spread.
Normal Open E is tuned to an open E chord on armpit guitar
